Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)

Induced pluripotent stem cells are adult cells — usually skin or blood cells — reprogrammed back into a pluripotent state, meaning they can in principle become any cell type in the body. iPS cells transformed research; clinically, they remain largely investigational.

How are iPS cells made?

A mature somatic cell is reprogrammed by introducing a defined set of transcription factors (classically OCT4, SOX2, KLF4 and c-MYC). The cell reverts to a pluripotent state and can then be directed toward neurons, cardiomyocytes, retinal pigment epithelium and other lineages. Because the starting cell can come from the patient, iPSC lines can be autologous.

iPSCs vs mesenchymal vs embryonic stem cells

Pluripotent stem cells can form any cell type; mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent and restricted to a narrower range. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent but raise sourcing and ethical questions that iPSCs avoid. The trade-off is control: pluripotency carries a tumour-formation risk that must be engineered out before clinical use.

  • iPSC — pluripotent, reprogrammed, mostly research and early trials
  • ESC — pluripotent, embryo-derived, restricted use
  • MSC — multipotent, adult/perinatal, the basis of most clinical regenerative protocols today

Where iPSC therapy stands today

Early-phase trials exist in macular degeneration, Parkinson's disease, heart failure and type 1 diabetes. These are conducted under strict regulatory oversight in dedicated trial settings. Any clinic offering routine commercial iPSC treatment for a broad list of conditions should be questioned closely.

StemCell Longevita does not offer iPSC treatment. Our clinical programmes use mesenchymal stem cell therapy and exosome therapy, with candidacy assessed individually.

Frequently asked questions

What does pluripotent mean?

A pluripotent stem cell can differentiate into cell types from all three germ layers — effectively any tissue in the body. Multipotent cells such as MSCs are limited to a smaller set of lineages.

Can I get iPSC treatment in Turkey?

Not as a routine clinical service. iPSC-derived products are trial-stage worldwide. We will say so plainly rather than substitute a different product and call it the same thing.

Why are iPSCs important if they are not yet treatments?

They allow disease modelling and drug screening using a patient's own cells, which is already changing how new therapies are developed.
