Wharton’s jelly is connective tissue within the umbilical cord that can contain mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). It is one source that may be discussed for allogeneic MSC products. Source does not, by itself, establish quality, safety, suitability, or likely benefit for a particular person.
Before a protocol is discussed, the clinical team should consider the patient’s diagnosis, medical history, current care, desired outcome, delivery route, product documentation, and the uncertainty of the evidence for that use.
Why Wharton’s jelly source may be part of the discussion
Umbilical-cord-derived material is typically donated after healthy births with consent, avoiding a harvesting procedure for the recipient. In protocol discussions, this can be relevant when comparing a donor-derived product with an autologous product that would require collection from the patient.
