A comprehensive guide to understanding stem cell therapy. Learn how mesenchymal stem cells work, types of treatments available, safety profiles, benefits, and what to expect during your therapy journey.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells found in connective tissues such as bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord (Wharton's jelly). They have unique abilities to differentiate into various cell types, modulate immune function, and secrete regenerative growth factors that promote tissue repair.
After administration (via IV infusion or targeted injection), MSCs migrate to sites of injury or inflammation — a process called "homing." Once there, they release paracrine signals (growth factors, cytokines) that reduce inflammation, stimulate local stem cells, and promote repair. They can also differentiate directly into damaged cell types in some tissues.
MSC therapy has clinical evidence for over 30 conditions including cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders (autism, MS, Parkinson's), orthopedic conditions (osteoarthritis, sports injuries), autoimmune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis), metabolic conditions (diabetes, liver disease), and anti-aging applications.
Published meta-analyses of thousands of patients show MSC therapy has an excellent safety profile. Wharton's jelly-derived MSCs are immunoprivileged, meaning rejection risk is extremely low even without HLA matching. Side effects are typically mild and temporary: low-grade fever, brief fatigue, or injection site discomfort.
