Chapter 1

Understanding Hepatitis

What Is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by viral infections (hepatitis A, B, C, D, E) but also by autoimmune disease, alcohol abuse, or toxic substances. Chronic hepatitis B and C affect over 350 million people worldwide and can lead to progressive liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma if untreated.

Disease Progression

Chronic inflammation damages liver cells (hepatocytes) and triggers fibrosis — the formation of scar tissue. Progressive fibrosis leads to cirrhosis, where scar tissue replaces functional liver tissue, impairing liver function. Cirrhosis increases the risk of liver failure, portal hypertension, and liver cancer. Even after successful antiviral treatment, liver fibrosis may persist and continue to affect liver function. The liver has remarkable regenerative capacity, but chronic hepatitis can overwhelm this ability. Stem cell therapy supports and amplifies the liver's natural regenerative processes, promoting the repair of fibrotic damage.

How Stem Cell Therapy Helps

Hepatic Regeneration

MSCs support liver regeneration through multiple mechanisms: they secrete hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) that stimulates liver cell proliferation, they reduce hepatic fibrosis by inhibiting stellate cell activation and collagen deposition, they modulate the hepatic immune environment to reduce ongoing inflammation, and they can differentiate into hepatocyte-like cells to contribute to liver tissue replacement. A meta-analysis of 12 clinical trials involving over 700 patients showed that MSC therapy significantly improved liver function markers (albumin, bilirubin, MELD score) and reduced liver fibrosis scores in chronic hepatitis patients.

Treatment at StemCell Longevita

Our Hepatitis Protocol

We use IV infusion of umbilical cord-derived MSCs, which are known to home to the liver via the hepatic portal circulation. High-dose treatment protocols are used for patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. Treatment is coordinated with your hepatologist to ensure optimal integration with antiviral therapy.

Treatment at Liv Hospital Ulus

  • Day 1 — Comprehensive hepatic evaluation including liver function tests, fibrosis markers, viral load (if applicable), and imaging.
  • Day 2-3 — Sequential IV stem cell infusions with hepatic function monitoring.
  • Day 4 — Post-treatment assessment and discharge with follow-up schedule.

Results & Recovery

Expected Improvements

Improvements in liver function markers typically become apparent within 4 to 8 weeks. Fibrosis regression may be measurable on elastography or biopsy at 6 to 12 months. Patients commonly report improved energy, reduced ascites, and better overall health over the months following treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Ideally, yes. Controlling the viral infection before or during stem cell therapy maximizes the regenerative potential by removing the ongoing source of liver damage. However, patients with decompensated liver disease may benefit from stem cell therapy even during antiviral treatment.

While complete reversal of advanced cirrhosis is unlikely, stem cell therapy can reduce fibrosis, improve liver function, and potentially prevent progression to liver failure. Earlier-stage fibrosis has greater reversal potential.

Yes, multiple clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of MSC therapy in patients with chronic liver disease, including those with cirrhosis. Our medical team carefully evaluates liver function to ensure safe treatment.

Most patients receive one to two treatment courses. Patients with advanced fibrosis may benefit from repeat treatments at 6 to 12 month intervals to sustain and enhance hepatic regeneration.
