Understanding Kidney Disease

What Is Chronic Kidney Disease?

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition in which the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluid from the blood. It affects approximately 10% of the global population. The most common causes are diabetes and hypertension. CKD is classified in stages 1 to 5, with stage 5 (end-stage renal disease) requiring dialysis or kidney transplant.

How CKD Progresses

Once kidney tissue is scarred, it cannot be restored with conventional medicine. Stem cell therapy offers hope by promoting regeneration of damaged nephrons and reducing the fibrosis that drives CKD progression.

  • Nephron damage — The functional units of the kidneys (nephrons) are progressively damaged by disease, hypertension, and inflammation.
  • Fibrosis — Damaged kidney tissue is replaced by scar tissue, further reducing filtration capacity.
  • Declining GFR — Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decreases as more nephrons are lost.
  • Complications — Advanced CKD causes anemia, bone disease, electrolyte imbalances, cardiovascular disease, and uremia.

How Stem Cell Therapy Helps

Renal Regeneration

MSCs support kidney recovery through anti-fibrotic effects that reduce renal scarring, secretion of renal protective growth factors, reduction of kidney inflammation, promotion of new blood vessel growth to improve renal blood flow, and potential differentiation into renal tubular epithelial cells. These combined effects can stabilize or improve kidney function. A systematic review of clinical studies found that MSC therapy improved GFR and reduced proteinuria in CKD patients, with some patients achieving enough improvement to delay or avoid the need for dialysis.

Treatment at StemCell Longevita

Our Renal Protocol

We use high-dose IV infusion of MSCs, which naturally home to damaged kidneys via the renal circulation. Treatment is combined with renal-supportive therapies and careful management of underlying conditions. Multiple infusion sessions are administered over 3 to 4 days to maximize cell delivery to the kidneys.

Treatment at Liv Hospital Ulus

  • Day 1 — Comprehensive renal evaluation including GFR, creatinine, BUN, electrolytes, urinalysis, and renal ultrasound.
  • Day 2-4 — Sequential IV stem cell infusions with renal function monitoring.
  • Day 5 — Post-treatment assessment, medication optimization, and discharge with follow-up schedule.

Results & Recovery

Expected Improvements

Improvements in renal function markers may be detectable within 4 to 8 weeks. Stabilization or improvement in GFR is typically assessed at 3 to 6 months. Patients commonly report improved energy, reduced symptoms of uremia, and better overall well-being.

If you have CKD stages 2 to 4 and want to explore regenerative options, contact us with your recent lab work and renal imaging for a free evaluation. Patients in early stages of CKD tend to achieve the best results.

Frequently asked questions

In some patients, stem cell therapy has improved renal function enough to significantly delay or avoid the initiation of dialysis. Results depend on the stage of CKD, underlying cause, and individual response to treatment.

Stem cell therapy can be administered to patients on dialysis, though the potential for kidney function recovery is more limited in advanced disease. Some patients may experience improvements in residual kidney function.

Patients with CKD stages 2 to 3 generally achieve the best outcomes, as there is more viable kidney tissue available for regeneration. Stage 4 patients can still benefit but with more modest expectations.

Most patients receive one initial course of treatment. Repeat treatments at 6 to 12 month intervals may be recommended to maintain and enhance renal function improvements.
